The Fuerte de San Diego was built by the Spanish in the early 17C to protect ships loaded with Far East silks and spices from pirates. The story of this trade, which ended with Mexican Independence, although not without leaving its mark on local culture, is recounted at the highly interesting Acapulco History Museum, along with Pre-Columbian history.
