Izamal
: Michelin's recommendations
The charming colonial village of Izamal was built on the site of a great Mayan religious centre dotted with five pyramids. At the base of one of them the Franciscans founded the convent of San Antonio de Padua under the auspices of Diego de Landa who brought an image of a Guatemalan Virgin here. Izamal rapidly became the most important sanctuary devoted to Mary in the Yucatán. The monastery is also known for its gigantic atrium. Kinich Kakmó pyramid, two blocks north of the Zócalo, is worth a visit.
