Plaza de Armas, a square fringed with ficus trees, is the historic heart of Querétaro, thriving under the gaze of its benefactor, the Marquis de la Villa del Villar, whose statue tops the fountain (1843). The magic of the square really comes out at nightfall, when a softer light leaves its special glow on the splendid colonial façades. You may have a hard time getting a table on one of the restaurant terraces.
