Start your day with a sightseeing tour of southern Mexico City by way of Insurgentes Avenue, where you can see some of the city's important monuments and buildings. Pass the Cibeles Fountain, bequeathed to Mexico by Spain and a replica of the fountain in Madrid. Admire the fine plastic work attached to the outside of the Siqueiros Cultural Poliforum, and take notice of Plaza Mexicothe largest bullring in the world. Arrive at the National University of Mexico campus and marvel at Latin America's largest campus, home to the Olympic Stadium and the Central Library, which is adorned with a mural by Juan O'Gorman.
The tour continues with a trip to Xochimilco, known as the "Place of Flowers." Xochimilco is home to canals that are actually remnants of an ancient lake, part of the once great Aztec Anahuac Valley. Climb aboard one of the Aztec's traditional boats, called "Trajineras," and float down an ancient canal to get an idea of how the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan looked before the conquerors arrived.
