European paintings have pride of place at the Museo Nacional de San Carlos, housed in a Neoclassical building built between 1798 and 1805 by Manuel Tolsá. Paintings by Zurbarán (Cena de Emaús), Goya and Ingres ( the Infant St John the Baptist) punctuate the collections, covering 500 years of painting from the 15C to the early 20C. Temporary exhibitions.
