A vast 10m-high platform is the base for the palace, a maze-like architectural complex built during the 7C. It features courtyards, stairways, corridors and underground galleries, where you can easily get lost while admiring the magnificent stone and stucco decor that was once polychrome. A curious tower on thePatio de la Torre was probably used as an astronomical observation post. Next to it, in building E, a bas-relief oval panel represents King Pakal and his mother. The Patio Este has preserved its fine stone slabs with sculptures of figures in profile.
