Discover the colour, culture, and local hotspots dotted around this ancient Moroccan city during this half-day tour of Fes.
Founded at the beginning of the 9th century, and barely changed since, this enchanting city has been a seat of government, philosophy, medicine and religion ever since.   This is the best surviving example of an ancient Arab city, with its 'new' city, established in the 12th century, and its 2,000-year-old medina being a place where donkeys and mules still plod through the streets.
Head off exploring the alleyways and visiting some of its wealth of museums, including the Wood Museum and Museum Batha with its impressive collection of ceramics. Head into the heart of the souqs to search out babouches (leather slippers), silver Berber jewellery, blue-glazed Fassi ceramics, pots of saffron, pyramids of spices or famous Moroccan carpets. Learn about the work that goes into traditional Berber carpets at a special demonstration, then head to a pottery cooperative to see how the local ceramics get their distinct cobalt blue finish.
Take a break from the shopping to enjoy an extra strong cup of coffee from a medina cafe.   Leave the souq behind and head to the multicoloured tanneries to snap that classic photo of the honeycomb vats.
Next it's on to the Medersa Bou Inania, an educational institute that was built between 1350 and 1356. Beautifully restored, this site is famous for its massive carved brass doors that hide the restful marble-floored space, tinkling fountain and jaw-dropping tile work within. Look out for the mihrab (niche pointing the way to Mecca) with its beautiful ceiling and massive marble columns.
In the afternoon, as this tour of Fez wraps up, take up your guide's recommendations of great restaurants to while away the afternoon, or head back into the souq to pick up more mementos of your time in this vibrant Moroccan city.
