Moulay Ismaïl (1647-1727) was a builder sultan who left Meknes the legacy of his outstanding achievements. Enjoy Bab Berdaïne and Bab el Khémis, two superb gates pierced in the dozens of kilometres of walls erected at the time. The “wall of the Rich”, which protected the well-to-do from invaders, opens onto the imperial city featuring the Aguedal pool, Dar el Ma and granaries for storing water and goods; the sultan’s tomb and the Christians’ prison. The legendary Bab Mansour (Mansour Gate) was finished after the sultan’s death.
