Oujda, in the eastern tip of Morocco, is the capital of the Oriental region. It is a large town built in an arid area on the Angad Plains and shut off from oceanic influences by the barrier of the Rif and Middle Atlas, and from the Mediterranean oceanic influences by the Beni-Snassen Mountains. While Oujda is limited as a tourist destination – although the proposed renovation of its medina might make it more appealing – the town is an ideal point of departure for exploring the area.
