Chellah, an abandoned Roman city, was transformed in the 13C into a royal cemetery by the Marinides. The ruins of Sala Colonia take the place of honour, exhumed during excavations undertaken in the 20C which revealed the remains of a fountain, a triumpal arch and the Decumanus Maximus. In the necropolis in the Muslim section you can see the tomb of sultan Abou el Hassan and that of his wife, the “lady of Chellah”. Treasures are scattered around the lush garden on the site, surrounded by a wall with an elegant gate.
