Bibendum
Founded by Louis Bonaparte in 1808, by 1875 the Rijksmuseum needed a special building constructed by P.J.H. Cuypers to house its collection. Famous for its exceptional gallery of 15th to 17th Century painting, the museum also contains paintings from the 18th and 19th Centuries, a sculpture and decorative art section, a print collection, a textiles and costumes section and a collection of Asiatic art. Works by Rembrandt and Vermeer are the gems in the gallery of 15th to 17th Century painting. Amongst them are Rembrandt's famous Night Watch and Jewish Bride, with Vermeer's, Milkmaid and Young Woman in Blue reading a Letter. Also not to be missed are the Seven Acts of Mercy by the Master of Alkmaar and the Double Portrait in a Garden by F. Halls. In the History of the Netherlands section the principal stages in the country's development are outlined. The Print Collection contains a fine selection of drawings and engravings from the 15th Century to the present day. In the 18th and 19th Century galleries the works of Troost (18th century), of Israëls (19th Century) and of Goya stand out. The costumes and textiles include Dutch costumes from the 18th and 19th Centuries. In the Asiatic art section there are sculptures, paintings and crafts from numerous Asian countries, including a stunning Indian statue of Shiva, King of the Dance (12th Century).
