Founded in 1267, the Beguine convent was moved here in 1531 It is comprised of 29 sober houses which border a courtyard containing a garden of medicinal plants and a chapel . The former chapel of the Beguine monks, which is now the Walloon Church (Waalse Kerk), stands at the entrance to the beguine convent. The Friesian and former governor of New-Amsterdam (New York) Peter Stuyvesant (1592-1672) was married here.
