Brielle : Michelin's recommendations

An old stronghold on the island of Voorne, Brielle was a working port at the mouth of the Meuse. It was also a place famous for the victory of the Sea Beggars (who left England in 1572) against the occupying Spaniards. Today, Brielle is a tourist centre profiting from the nearby lake of Brielle ( Brielse Meer ). The town has kept part of its past in the remains of its fortifications, now promenades and peaceful quays lined with old houses ( Maarland ).

Briel history Museum

Markt 1 NL - 3231 AN Brielle

This small museum - set up in a building (1623) which has been used in the past as a town prison and a public weigh house - is located behind the town hall (18C), over the Wellerondom. It charts the lively history of the town and island of Voorne.

St-Catharijnekerk church

NL - 3231 Brielle

This 15 C church was never completed. In the Gothic Brabant style, it is fronted by massive stone porch tower (57m de haut). The carillon, cast in 1660 by Hemony, was enlarged and now accommodates 48 bells.
