This square accommodates a statue of Rixt van het Oerd: a woman with a hooked nose carrying a storm lantern. Legend has it that this widow lived off of what she found on the beach. One day when she had not found anything to eat for some days, she coaxed a ship onto the sandbanks on the Ameland shore using a storm lantern in order that it should run aground. Her ruse succeeded but Rixt was distressed to discover that her own son, having recently become a sailor, was among the casualties.
