These two places (17km to the south-east of Alkmaar) were joined in 1970. Graft has preserved from its past an attractive town hall dating from 1613 with stepped gables. Rijp , a large herring fishing and whaling centre in the 16 and 17C, also has a town hall from 1630, built by Jan Adriaensz . Further on you can see typical houses of the region with wooden gables and a church, Hervormde Kerk , decorated with windows painted in the 17C.
