Delft enjoys a worldwide reputation for its pottery ("Delft blue"). Moreover its old shady canals, monuments and museums make it a Dutch city which has kept its character, a refined place which encourages daydreaming. The lawyer Hugo de Groot , the painter Johannes Vermeer and the naturalist Antonie van Leeuwenhoek were all born there. The latter (17-18C) made a multitude of natural discoveries thanks to the microscopes that he made.
