Dokkum : Michelin's recommendations
Located in the north of Friesland, Dokkum hides behind the remains of its ramparts, above which rise towers and tall windmills. This small town is built on a mound and was once a flourishing port. It was here that St Boniface was executed (754) along with his 52 companions. He came to convert Friesland in 716 then left to rejoin St Willibrord at Utrecht. He met his death on his second mission to Friesland and was buried in Germany, at Fulda, where he had founded a monastery.
