Groothoofdspoort was formerly the town's main gate (1618). It is surmounted by a dome, and both sides of the gate are covered in ornaments and sandstone bas-reliefs. From the Northern quay there is a beautiful view of the area where the Merwede, the Noord and the Old Meuse meet. Dusk is when the rush hour for boats moving along in the water starts. From the other side of the gate, near the movable bridge, the Wijnhaven yachting port forms a splendid view together with the pinnacles of a distant chapel.
