Enkhuizen : Michelin's recommendations
The residence of the Frisian chiefs until 1289, Enkhuisen was fortified at the start of the 16C and was also one of the first towns to revolt against the Spanish. The once flourishing port (herring fishing), silted up in the 18C, completely gave up its maritime activities with the construction of the dyke on the IJsselmeer (1932). Since then the town has exploited the fertility of the land behind it by growing tulips. A dyke road links it to Lelystad.
