Giethoorn Travel guide
Giethoorn
: Michelin's recommendations
Giethoorn nestles in a marshy region. Its smart thatched cottages line the canals which were dug out for the transport of peat, the huge extraction of which in past centuries created the lakes here. The town owes its name to the horns of the wild goats (geitenhoorns) found there by the peatdiggers. The canals of the lakeside village are crossed by humpback bridges or simple footbridges. Cars are banned here, so the bicycle and the boat are the favourite means of transport.
