Nestling on the edge of three provinces (Zuid Holland, Noord Brabant and Gelderland), Gorinchem, or Gorkum , is a large river intersection located at the confluence of two large rivers, the Waal (a branch of the Rhine) and the Meuse, of the Merwedekanaal. It has a large marina (west). The strategic position of this town which was founded in the 13C meant that it was besieged many times. It was one of the first strongholds wrested from the Spanish by the Sea Beggars in 1572.
