Frans Halsmuseum : Michelin's recommendations
Since 1913, this museum has occupied the former hospice for the elderly (1608). Devoted mainly to the work of Frans Hals, whose evolution can be traced in eight paintings of civic guards and regents. The museum also has many works by other painters: old paintings, the Haarlem school (17 C), modern and contemporary Dutch paintings. Finally, the Frans Halsmuseum contains a beautiful collection of silverware, furniture and objets d'art. The former hospice, which also served as an orphanage in the 19 C, possesses a facade characteristic of this type of institution with, on either side of the entrance gate, a succession of low houses topped with crowstep roof dormers. Among the works of Frans Hals, the Banquet of the Officers of the St. George Company of Archers (1616) marks the painter's already masterful debut. In 1633, the artist reached the high point of his career with the Meeting of the Officers of the St. Adrian Company of Archers. In his last works, such as the two paintings of the Regents of the Hospice for the Elderly, Hals sometimes takes a rather uncompromising look at his subjects. In the series of old paintings, enjoy the work of J. van Scorel (Baptism of Christ), of M. van Heemskerck and of C. van Haarlem. The principal masters of the 17 C (the Haarlem school) are represented by E. Van Velde, Van Goyen, Van Ostade, S. and J. van Ruysdael, Terborch, Wouwerman, Cuyp, P. Claesz, W. Heda, F. van Schooten, A. van Beyeren and Verspronck.
