Located beside the Meuse, which becomes the Bergse Maas here, Heusden is an old stronghold which was fortified in 1581. As with Woudrichem, it formed part of the region of Heusden and Altena. Following a restoration of the town, the ramparts have been laid out for walking. Heusden still has three pivot windmills .
