Located beside the Ijsselmeer, this small town is one of the "eleven towns"of Friesland. A member of the Hanseatic League, it was once very prosperous as a result of its trade with Norway. Away from the road, Hindeloopen spends its days peacefully with paths winding between houses and gardens and its footbridges crossing small canals. In the summer it is enlivened by the presence of many amateur sailors.
