IJmuiden : Michelin's recommendations

This town located at the end of the North Sea canal is famous for its locks. But IJmuiden is also a seaside resort and the number one fishing port in the Netherlands (and the seventh largest in western Europe). Forty or so trawlers are fitted out there for herring fishing. The market halls for auction sales are very important here.

Locks

Three locks (sluizen) allow buildings weighing up to 80 000 t to make their way back up to Amsterdam. The northern lock (Noordersluis) is the most recent: it was begun in 1919 and finished in 1930. The 400m long lock is 40m wide and 15m deep.
