Among the canalside meadows and reeds stand 19 windmills over a 2km stretch, made famous by their number, size and the beauty of the marshy plain. Bearing witness to the never-ending battle against the rising water, they have since 1997 been on Unesco's list of World Heritage sites. Until 1950, they were used to dry out the Alblasserwaard. Today their sails only turn for the tourists who can also enjoy the surroundings by taking a boat trip.
