Naturalis : Michelin's recommendations
This is a magnificent museum dedicated to nature. The interior courtyard of the lazaret has an information centre beside it. The museum's permanent exhibitions are in the modern wing which is reached along a glass passageway. The prehistoric Parade has fossils, dinosaur skeletons (including the mosasaurus) and the remains of Java Man, a million years old. Hundreds of varied animals run, fly, swim or creep in the Theatre of Nature. You will also discover many plants, mushrooms, algae, bacteria, rocks and minerals. The Earth exhibition is most informative about the causes of earthquakes and volcanoes, the evolution of the earth's crust, the climate and the atmosphere as well as everything that goes on inside the earth. The Life exhibition is dedicated to food, safety and reproduction. In the Ecosystems room, video displays illustrate various ecosystems (ice fields, desert, tundra, tropical forest) and the interdependence between animals, plants and their environment. The Visions exhibition on Nature evokes the various views of man on Nature across the ages and cultures. Finally you must visit the Treasures room which has the rich collection of precious stones of King William I as well as special minerals and extinct animals. The temporary exhibitions will also give you an appreciation of the vast collections in the museum: ten million mammals, insects, birds, butterflies, fossils and minerals.
