Lelystad, capital of the province of Flevoland, bears the name of the engineer, Lely. This new town, intended to have 80,000 inhabitants by the year 2000, is mainly made up of low buildings. The Agora , a community building (1976), marks the centre of the town. Lelystad is linked to Enkhuizen by a dyke, the Markerwaarddijk (31 km), which has a road on it. The Oostvaardersdiep, a 300m wide canal, is a navigable route between Amsterdam and the north of the country.
