This polder of 43 000 ha, mostly drained in 1968, is separated from Oostelijk Flevoland by a safety dyke, the Knardijk. It is surrounded by a dyke built from 1959 to 1967. Half the land is dedicated to agriculture, the rest is given over to the inhabitants, to breeding, to woods, dykes and roads. Some towns like Almere to the south, or Zeewolde, at the level of Harderwijk, with yacht marinas, have been under construction for many years.
