Marken
: Michelin's recommendations
Separated from the continental landmass by the creation of the Zuiderzee (in the 13C), Marken was an island until 1957. Now rejoined to the coast, it is located beside the Gouwzee, a sort of inland sea. Its Protestant population has always formed a sort of closed circle. It has preserved its old character with wooden houses and inhabitants dressed, in season, in traditional costumes. It used to thrive from fishing before the creation of the IJsselmeer but today Marken relies heavily on tourism.
