In order to protect themselves from floods, the houses are grouped on small mounds and built on piles. They are mostly made of wood painterd dark green and with lightly encorbelled lateral gables. The painted and oilskin interiors are richly decorated with crockery and knick-knacks and the beds are set up in alcoves, where a small drawer used to serve as a cradle.
