Today this is the seat of the provincial government of Zeeland but this vast collection of monastery buildings was once an abbey which was deconsecrated after the capture of the town by the Sea Beggars. There you can visit the Historama Abdij Milddeburg, which tells the story of the abbey and its former occupants, the Abbatial churches (Koorkerk, Nieuwe Kerk) and the museum of Zeeland. The gate in the surrounding wall (Gistpoort) shows an attractive 16C façade on the Damplein.
