: Michelin's recommendations
The former capital of the Gooi was bathed by the Zuiderzee and was swallowed up in the 12C. It was rebuilt in the 14C further inland and became an important stronghold seized by the Spanish in 1572 then by the French in 1673. Today, it is a peaceful town still surrounded by its impressive 17C fortifications .
