This tunnel was created in 1967 to relieve congestion in the Maastunnel, which was unable to cope with the spectacular increases in car traffic. It links the two banks of the river and avoids the centre of town, reducing traffic jams. 1300 m long, the Beneluxtunnel was dug to depths of 22,5 m below the bed of the river.
