Boijmans van Beuningen Museum : Michelin's recommendations
Set on the edge of the Museumpark, this exceptional museum of Fine-Arts occupies a building erected in 1935. The collection here was considerably improved in 1958, thanks to the van Beuningen bequest (from which the museum gets its name). In the Old Masters section Van Eyck's masterwork The Three Marys at the Tomb, together with paintings by Bosch, including The Prodigal Son, should not be missed. There are also masterpieces by Brueghel the Elder, Rembrandt, Seghers, Jan Steen and Rubens (a fine series on the life of Achilles). The Willen van der Vorm collection includes paintings from the 17th and 18th Centuries (Chardin, Watteau, Francesco Guardi), as well as the 19th (the Barbizon School). The very extensive collection of prints and sketches covers the period from the 15th Century to the present day, grouping work by Dürer, Da Vinci, Rembrandt, Watteau, Cézanne and Picasso. The modern and contemporary art section covers the period from 1850 to the present day. There are Impressionist paintings as well as canvases by artists like Signac, Van Gogh, Mondrian and Kandinsky. Amongst the Surrealists Dali and Magritte stand out, while the contemporary collection includes works by Serra, Bruce Nauman and Beuys, with contemporary Dutch artists like Van Elk, C. Visser, R. van Koningsbruggen and R. Daniels also represented. Amongst the most current works are paintings by M. Kunc and de Salvo and sculptures by T. Schütte, Bazilebustamante and N. Kamp.
