The city centre is modern and full of tall buildings that are occupied by banks, offices and businesses. There are numerous statues dotted about. The two main thoroughfares are Lijnbaan, a shopping street with a number of pedestrian sectors, and Coolsingel, where the City Hall, the Post Office and Stock Exchange are grouped together. The Theatre square, which has been entirely re-designed by Adriaan Geuze, is surfaced with metal plates, some of which can be raised to create podiums.
