This museum is in the intriguing setting of a former prison. The 13th Century fortified gate was once part of the Binnenhof castle. It was turned into a prison in the 15th Century and a number of illustrious Dutchmen have been incarcerated within its walls, Cornelis de Witt among them. Today it houses a museum: the Medieval instruments of torture demonstrate the cruelty of that period.
