Life in Utrecht is concentrated mainly on this square which links the old town and the new districts. It was here that the old fortress of Charles V used to stand. A music centre (Muziekcentrum) has been here since 1978, an original design by Herzberger which today houses the Tourist Office. To the west is the new shopping centre of Hoog Catharijne which contains busy galleries, a large hotel and Beatrixgebouw, the main building of the Exhibition hall.
