Witmarsum : Michelin's recommendations

Witmarsum is the birthplace of the founder of the Mennonite cult, Menno Simonsz , an old priest who in 1536 broke away from the Catholics to embrace the Anabaptist doctrine. Belief in the Bible, rejection of the baptism of children, stress on personal piety, refusal to obey any established church - this was the doctrine of Simonsz. Several monuments commemmorate him in the town and the surrounding area.
