Travelling north from Auckland your journey into Northland will take you through rolling countryside, rural towns and past sandy beaches to Paihia, situated in the beautiful Bay of Islands.
Sit back, relax and enjoy the informative commentary as you soak up New Zealand's spectacular scenery of native forests and sub-tropical bush - right to the foreshores of the beautiful Bay of Islands. Upon arrival, there is leisure time to explore the quaint and historical, seaside village of Paihia.
A guided tour of the historic Waitangi Treaty Grounds, where in 1840, the Treaty of Waitangi was signed between Maori and the British Crown, offers a truly unique insight into New Zealand's early history. Explore the original Treaty House, one of New Zealand's oldest and most visited historic homes and the Te Whare Runanga, a fully carved Maori meeting house, which is representative of all Iwi (regional tribes) in New Zealand.

Then, a short trip across the water by ferry will bring you to the elegant township of Russell, rich and history and colonial architecture. From here you will enjoy the Russell Mini Tour by coach. This intimate tour is very informative, lead by an engaging guide who has a fantastic combination of historical knowledge and local insight, really bringing the cultural history of the area alive!
Learn about historical sights such as Christ's Church, and New Zealand's oldest Roman Catholic Building, 'Pompallier Mission'. You'll also hear more about the world's second oldest game fishing club- the Bay of Islands Swordfish Club, which is found along the township's waterfront.
Although charming Russell may seem tranquil today, learn of its rowdy past in the early 19th century when it was a lawless open port, earning it the name, the 'Hell Hole of the Pacific'.
You will also be treated to 360 degree views of the Bay of Islands from the top of Flagstaff Hill (Te Maiki), and hear what it is like to live in beautiful Russell today!
