The site of Huari (or Wari), in the upper central Andes, was without doubt the capital of the powerful kingdom of the Huari (700-1000AD). At the time it would have had nearly 50,000 inhabitants. The current vestiges show a circular urban plan. The dilapidated ruins, overrun by vegetation and gorse, cover a surface of 15 to 20km², of which only a small portion has been uncovered.
