Although Cajamarca was named by the Indians that occupied the region for several millennia (4CBC – 15C), the town is above all renowned for having been where the Spanish assassinated Atahualpa, the last Inca emperor. Nowadays, visitors can explore the convents and churches of its picturesque colonial city centre, set against a background of mountains. The region is home to exciting archaeological vestiges, such as the Ventanillas burial grounds at Otuzco and the Cumbe Mayo aqueduct.
