It is an amazing sight to see the multitude of square openings dug into the cliff, lined and piled up in neat lines and rows. Although they may initially be reminiscent of troglodyte habitations, the ventanillas of Otuzco (7-13C) were in reality Cajamarca Indian burial places, formerly sealed off by rich gold or silver doors that were looted by the Spanish on their arrival. It remains a fascinating testimonial of this forgotten culture.
