Laid out on the site of the former colonial ramparts, in the 19C the Parque universitario housed the Universidad de San Marcos, the oldest university of the American continent. It is now home to the Museo de Arte, Museo de Arqueología y Antropología and Panteón de los Procederes. An imposing clock tower offered by the Germans to celebrate the centenary of Independence stands in the pleasantly peaceful park.
