The third largest town of Peru, Trujillo is also one of the most welcoming of the northern coast. Famous for its graceful wrought-iron windows, carved wooden balconies and brightly coloured façades, the elegant colonial city is a leading tourist and cultural hub. Nearby are vestiges of the Chimú and Mochica civilisations, in particular the immense city of Chan Chan and pyramids of Moche, in addition to lovely beaches, the most picturesque of which is that of Huanchaco. The city centre also boasts some fine restaurants.
