A dozen adobe fortresses, grouped quite close together and probably built by different sovereigns, all of which contain a palace, houses, water tanks, ceremonial areas and mortuary chambers. Such is the exceptional archaeological site of Chan Chan, capital of the Chimú from the 12C to 15C.
