From the picturesque village of Maras, home to colonial houses adorned with coats of arms, a rocky path winds its way through a stunning panorama of lush green pampas framed by the snow-capped peaks of the Urubamba and Vilcabamba cordilleras. An amazing vision suddenly appears composed of tiny terraces of basins, carved out of the mountainside by the Incas. They were used, and still are, to collect the salt water from an underground spring. Seen from above, they form a wonderful patchwork of ochre, brown and white.
