An unrivaled number of preserved structures make up the 932 mile (1500 km) Wooden Architecture Routecomprised of 200 structures including churches, belfries, granaries, cottages, and manor houses.
Although a local saying goes, "Kazimierz the Great received a Poland made of wood but gave it back built of stone," most local carpenters in the rural areas continued to build of wood. This seemingly inferior material was cheaper, more available, and enabled people to be self-reliant. As a result, wooden architecture prevailed in the countryside where buildings were erected in harmony with the landscape.
A relatively short distance from Cracow, this excursion takes you to the most attractive and maintained sitesover 200 churches, belfries, granaries, cottages, and manor houses and also gives you a chance to see the countryside off the main tourist routes.
