Set in the heart of the new university district, this imposing modern construction, begun in 1934, was only really completed in 1989. The main building (Gmach Glowny) of the National Museum is home to the Arms and Colours in Poland gallery, the arts and crafts gallery, the gallery of 20C Polish art and often holds excellent temporary exhibitions. In front of the museum is a monument commemorating painter Stanislaw Wyspianski.
