Most of the main streets in Gdansk are protected by impressive gateways. Built in the 16C by the Flemish architect Willem van den Blocke, the Upper Gate was the main entrance to the city in the 19C. The coats of arms on the gate are those of Gdansk (lions), Prussia (unicorns), and Poland. Preceding the gate are the buildings of the Foregate (prison tower, torture room) that date from the 14C.
